I’ll Email You

I don’t really like talking on the phone.

Now, talking to extremely close friends and family – that’s fine. I can handle the basic service calls required to get my cable fixed. But I’ll always opt to order pizza online rather than by calling the order in. I don’t like to chat on the phone, I don’t like to “call to say hello.”  I generally don’t use the phone to keep in touch with people. I use e-mail, figuring that folks can read it on their own time, and get back to me at a time that’s convenient for them.

This is also why I don’t typically give my cellphone number out to folks. Because while I’m an early-ish adopter for electronic gadgets (when the pocketbook allows) I still haven’t completely accepted the idea that I need a cellphone. I used to pay for a monthly plan, but when I realized how little I used it, it seemed ridiculous to even pay for the lowest possible contract. So I use a pay-as-you go plan, and the $25 I put on the phone every three months is constantly being rolled over.

That being said, Mr. Martini does need a cellphone for his new job as an emergency contact. He hasn’t had one in over a year, so we went out and got him a new pay-as-you-go phone this weekend. And while I don’t use my phone that often, I decided it was time to get a new phone for myself, with one very specific feature:

26 - QWERTY

My new phone has a QWERTY keypad. It’s not a smart phone, it’s still pay-as-you-go and doesn’t really have web connectivity (in other words – no Twitter, no blogging, etc.). But now I can TEXT people with much greater ease.

And since I pay about as much for a text as I do for a minute of conversation, and my conversations rarely last longer than 3 minutes, I figured that it was worth it. That’s how much I dislike talking on the phone.

I’m such a Luddite. Now hand me my iTouch.

I am sooooo right there with you! In fact, I also purchased a new phone this week (the Samsumg seek with full slide out qwerty keyboard) so that I could text instead of talk. And I always order my pizza online, and I never call anyone if an email will do.

I think I like typing as opposed to talking because it gives you a chance to arrange what you want to say and come up with the word that I really want and erase the stupid stuff before hitting send. With talking, I just kind of babble like an idiot.
