Veteran’s Day – Thanks, Dad

It’s Veteran’s Day. It’s also my Dad’s birthday. My dad is a veteran, who came home from the Korean War, married my mom, and had six kids, all of which (except me) had kids. This is my dad, and my most of my immediate family, taken at our family reunion this summer:

Everyone!

That’s Dad in the back row, on the left.

This summer at the reunion, my dad talked for the first time, ever, about his experiences in Korea, some of the things he saw, and some of the people he knew that didn’t make it home. As he looked around at all of us, he marveled at the fact that he was so lucky to survive the war, to come home and start a family, the family he was surrounded by, none of whom would be there if he hadn’t come home.

I have opinions about our current wars, theoretical ideas whether or not we should be fighting them. But I have nothing but respect and admiration for the soldiers who serve our country, in our current situations and in previous endeavors.

Thanks, Dad. And Happy Birthday.
