Questions about the Spa
I just wrote and deleted a rant about a horrible rental car I had to drive this week, with its warning lights and filthy windows and the smell, oh wow, the SMELL, but I figured I’d spare the universe my spewing and just think of something happy instead.
For instance – this weekend, I’m finally using the gift certificate Mr. Martini gave me last Christmas for a local spa. I’m going to get a facial, my very first facial, and I’m both excited and nervous about it. I know! Nervous about a spa treatment that really is meant only to relax me. But I am not a “spend the day at the spa” type, and so I’m a little overwhelmed by the unknown rules and procedures and I’m filled with hope that the facial-giving person (is there a word for that?) isn’t too chatty, because nothing stresses me out more than having to make small talk with a stranger. They also mentioned something about a complimentary robe – what do I wear underneath it? How much undressing will I be required to do? These are the types of questions I have, people.
The person on the phone advised me to arrive a half an hour early to “partake of the full spa experience” including the steam room and sauna. Please see above question re: required undressing. I’m seriously concerned about that.
Really, I have no idea what that’s going to be like. But I’m going to try my hardest to just go along for the ride, relax, and enjoy myself.
Do you think they’ll let me bring along my camera, so I can take a self-portrait for my 365 project?
And please note that if I can, this picture will NOT involve the above question re: required undressing.

Since you’re just getting a facial, you shouldn’t be required to strip down. I’d bring (or wear) comfy clothes to put on under your robe.
As for the steam room/sauna – some women go in there au natural, but it’s perfectly fine to wear a swimsuit in there if you want.
Or keep your towel on in the sauna. I really don’t know why people pay to sweat though. It’s beyond me.
The thought of going to a spa stresses me out, too. There’s too much pressure to be relaxed. I’d never cut it.
I had similar anxiety before my first professional massage, so I can imagine how you feel about this spa facial.
If you’re interested, here’s what I wrote about the anxiety: http://www.doahleigh.com/2006/05/what-are-you-supposed-to-wear-to-a-massage/
And here’s a guide I wrote for first-time massager-getters: http://www.doahleigh.com/2006/10/my-first-professional-massage-a-helpful-guide-to-other-first-timers/
If it’s a really nice spa, you will likely be expected to wear a robe for a facial, because the facial can include extras that extend to other body parts. One thing I don’t think doahleigh’s useful guide mentions is that spa robes tend to run small (fitting up to about a size 12 in my experience). I only recently discovered they keep a secret stash of larger robes to fit those of us in the size 14-16 range that you have to ask for.
