    New City, Old City

    By Susan | July 16, 2009

I’m really getting used to life in Louisville, but there are times when I can’t help comparing things to Chicago. I guess that’s natural, since we lived in Chicago for so much longer than we’ve been here in Louisville, and the two are so different in so many ways. But it’s weird how the little things really stand out.

For one thing, did you know that you can be fined for having tinted car windows in Chicago? I never really thought about it until I was driving and parking in Louisville. That’s when I realized how much I used to rely on being able to see the faces of other drivers both when I’m driving and when I’m walking (“Do you see me?”).

Compounding the fact that I sometimes can’t see other driver’s faces when they’re driving, is that you’re not required to use hands-free phones in Louisville. And while it’s probably just as distracting to drive and talk on the phone whether the device is hands-free or not, there’s something to be said for having a full-range of sight when talking on a hands-free device. Unlike the lady who almost cut me off this morning because she had her phone in her left hand and couldn’t turn her head enough to look for me in her blind spot.

The third thing I noticed just today had something to do with an ad I saw on the back cover of the local free weekly. Basically, it was  gun range offering classes for your conceal/carry license. There’s no way you’d see an ad like that on the back of the Chicago Reader, since it’s illegal to carry concealed weapons in Chicago.

These are just three things that I noticed today, before I even got into work. There are so many more, but I notice them less and less frequently now. I’m becoming more and more acclimated, but every once in a while, something just hits me and I think, “wow, I’m really not in Chicago anymore.”
