The Weird and The Wonderful that is Chicago

A few random observations to get that ServerSeed Server Seed post off the front page.

1.  I had a great weekend.  I was going to post all about the amazing time Mr. Martini and I had on Saturday night, but he already wrote about it on his site.  Like I needed one more reason to love my neighborhood: they brought Guinness trucks practically to my doorstep.  Awesome.

2.  This morning, while waiting for a Red Line train at Belmont, I saw one of the yellow-vested CTA workers (who have been working the stations more regularly, it seems, since Huberman arrived) hop down onto the tracks.  He bent down, removed something from track level, and placed it on the platform.  It was a woman’s flip-flop, and the owner looked extremely grateful to have it back as she wiggled her foot into it.

3.  I had to run an errand at lunch yesterday, and as I crossed the bridge over the river, I saw what can only be described as a “boxing barge:”

Boxing Barge on Chicago RiverÂ

Boxers in Ring on Chicago RiverÂ

The two boxers were doing a little sparring, as a promotion for some sort of World Championship.  It was really, really bizarre to see them drift down the river. Well, get pushed down the river by the engine behind them, I should say.

4.  Not an observation, but a question:  Is Curves just for old ladies?  Because there’s one a block away from my apartment, it’s cheaper than a real gym, and it’s going to get cold soon.  I was thinking of joining, but I always thought it was for older women.  Anyone out there have any thoughts?

Edited to Add: OK, I think I was a little harsh about the “old ladies” line up there in #4.  Because, all things considered, (a)I’m not exactly a spring chicken, and (2)I bet most of the women that go to Curves could kick my ass on the weightlifting and stationary jogging at this point.  So I’ll amend that to say – has anyone here been to a Curves, and tried the workout?  What did you think?

I think that there are younger women at Curves, too. I used to have one down the street from me and it was a range of 30s-50s women. From what I understand it is primarily using the machines and then you run in place or something in between the different machines. From what I have heard it is a more comfortable place to workout than a traditional gym because it is a more supportive environment.

You can probably go for a free trial and check it out and see if you like it before you sign up.

Oh, and that boxing barge is cool. Sorry I missed it!

I love that you have a photo of a boxing barge in this post!

I tried Curves for a while, and, in my experience, it was just old ladies (old meaning retirement age). But that wasn’t the problem for me. The problem was that they play games and stuff while you’re working out. A Curves employee stands in the center of the circuit and asks trivia questions, or she walks around and talks to each person individually during her workout. That may be fine for some people, but I have enough anti-social tendencies that I just want to be left alone when I’m at the gym. The workout itself is okay if you haven’t recently or ever worked out and need to ease into it. It’s not for more serious weights or cardio.

I wonder if the boxers got motion sickness.

Boxers floating downriver on a barge. That’s a little odd.
