We Come from Alabama and We Sell Apples

From the comments:

I have all of these stupid sleep tricks that I have to do to try and get myself to sleep well. – Librarian Girl

I read that this morning, and realized that last night while I was awake between the hours of 2 a.m. and 4:45 a.m., I tried only one of my tried and true “stop thinking about work/Battlestar Gallactica/whether various items around the house are broken and how I can fix them/Battlestar Gallactica AGAIN/what are the cats eating now/how freaked out I am by not sleeping, and just go to sleep already” tricks.  Which is:

  • Playing the “A My Name is Alice” jump rope game in my head until I become so bored I fall asleep.  Extra credit – play it backwards, but be careful because trying to think of the alphabet backwards could be too much thinking and cause more sleeplessness.

I also do the following:

  • A relaxation trick where each body part from my feet to my head “melts into the bed.”  However, forced relaxation has a backlash effect on me, in that it usually makes me more tense.  I’m a strange duck.
  • Trying to think through the plots of Shakespeare plays.  This is ususally a last resort if I’ve gotten all the way through the A My Name is Alice game.  Again, the prescription is to stop thinking about stressful things and bore myself to sleep.

Help a girl out – do you have any tricks you rely on when you’re having trouble sleeping?

Benadryl, baby! Not that I’m advising that anybody make a habit of that…

Hey, know how I get to sleep? I either sleep on the couch or get you to go into the other room so your tossing and turning doesn’t keep me awake!

    : ) . . .

    That was mean. I’m sorry.

Lack of sleep is making me turn on you.

I do the picturing numbers thing, 1-100, before I go to bed. Or perhaps you need a mantram to quiet your mind?

    Also, Battlestar Gallactica is AWESOME.

I have a trick, S, and her name is Gin. Mix with some olives and a cup and you’ve got Ambien beat any day.

Or I watch “the U”. If “Girlfriends” doesn’t put you to sleep then nothing will.
