Mememory Lane

The lovely Jamie of Here Be Subtlety tagged me for this meme. Have you seen her site? You totally should. It’s pretty and she has great taste in music and TV. So go say "Hi," OK?
What I was doing ten years ago
Ten years ago I was working at my first real job after college. To put this in perspective, when I graduated college, the country was experiencing a recession, and those of us graduating from small liberal arts colleges were lucky to be finding jobs of the paper-hat-"want-fries-with-that" variety. In fact, our senior year activities council was called "T.R.I.B.E" – Together Realizing the Impossibility of Becoming Employed. After college I spent a year working at local theaters, touring with children’s theater, temping, moving to Los Angeles to see if I’d like it (I didn’t), and finally, ended up back in NH with a job at an insurance company. So for the entire year of 1995, I processed health insurance claims for an HMO. I knew I was being cursed by someone every time I had to deny a claim, but luckily the irate phone calls were handled by another department.
In addition to being damned for all eternity by the HMO members, I was also doing a lot of theater. My high school drama coach had started his own theater company, and I ended up doing about 4 shows with him that year. I also did one of my first full-length Shakespeare shows that summer. So, technically, that’s what I was doing 10 year ago – processing health insurance claims by day, then traveling an hour to wear a poodle skirt in a 50’s version of "The Merry Wives of Windsor."
What I was doing five years ago
Five years ago this summer, I was completing my thesis for my Master’s Degree. I remember it was a summer afternoon when I had to defend it to my thesis committee. I remember it was easier than I had imagined it to be, but then, I had (and still have) a very active imagination. I received my diploma that August. And I don’t think I’ve used my degree since then.
Also? In the evenings, I was driving up to Cleveland and participating in a Shakespeare Festival. "Love’s Labor’s Lost." No poodle skirt this time, but a very minimalist outdoor production. What’s funny is that the director of that play is the playwright of the show Mr. Martini is in right now. Small world, huh?
What I was doing one year ago
According to my archives, I was doing memes and auditioning and not getting cast. I was also catching up from having taken a month off from work to – do you sense a theme? – perform at a Shakespeare Festival in Ohio – "Twelfth Night" to be specific. With fairly accurate Elizabethan costumes. Which were very hot. And HOTT, if you don’t mind me going all Paris Hiton.
Yesterday
I actually wrote this paragraph yesterday, funnily enough:
"I’m totally watching "Miss Teen USA" because I can’t find the remote. I’m a little fascinated, because they don’t look like teenagers at all. When one of them flashed "Age: 16" on screen, I thought it was a typo, because these girls look like they’re at least 25. Seriously. Creepy. Also? You can tell the dancers because they pirouette way the hell to much. It’s driving me a little batty. Also, I think one of the girls is used to working with a pole. Just sayin’. And? I always wear high heels with my bikini. Although I have to admit that joke is really old. Sorry."
So that’s what I did yesterday – I watched part of the Miss Teen USA pagent. I’m not proud.
5 snacks I enjoy
BBQ Potato chips, ice cream, Oreos, fruit salad without cantaloupe that someone else has prepared, Doritos
5 songs I know all the words to
Any song from Billy Joel’s "Glass Houses" and "The Stranger" except the French song – but even then I can make all the sounds even though I don’t know what I’m saying
5 things I would do with $100 million
Buy a house, buy my parents a house, send my parents on a trip anywhere they wanted, send all of my nieces and nephews to college, invest the rest and live on the interest
5 locations I would like to run away to
When I fantasize about running away, I usually picture myself:
- back in the mountains of New Hampshire,
- in a crowd in New York City,
- on a secluded beach in Bora Bora,
- driving across the dessert of the SouthWest U.S., or
- in the middle of a huge field in the middle of nowhere, with no houses or cars or people for miles, at night, where I can lay on a blanket and look at the stars.
5 bad habits I have
Biting my fingernails, falling asleep with the light on when I’m reading, not completing memes.
Ha! It’s true! I can’t seem to finish this one today, but if you’d like, feel free to copy it and make your own post. Here are the other categories:
5 things I like doing
5 things I would never wear
5 TV shows I like
5 biggest joys of the moment
5 favorite toys
Now I’m tagging:
Have fun!

I like your fifth choice for Places To Run Away To. Although my ideal place would include a lake. And I think I’ve seen worse things than beauty pageants. I honestly watched a whole episode of Sponge Bob once. And I admit I kept watching because I wanted to know how it ended.

OMG Space – check out my posting on Wed July 20 (sorry for the indirect link) – http://cut-2-the-chase.blogspot.com/2005_07_01_cut-2-the-chase_archive.html
#3 on my list is Glass Houses.
And that French song? Here is a hint – he sings the same things in the french part as he does in the english part so if you want to learn a little french, you can start there.
And you seem to be on a roll lately in getting me to almost shoot liquids out my nose (I should know by now to not drink while reading SpaceCase) That comment about one of the pageant contestants working with a pole nearly did it.
Keep it up! I will refrain from any liquids next time.
